Hi,
The error message about "An Unknown Error Occured During Portal Communication" means that
ABAP stack is not properly configured with JAVA stack.
So, please check whether ABAP stack is configured properly as per following SAP Note:
917950 - SAP Netweaver 2004s: Setting up BEx Web
Also, please note that Support Desk Tool is used (instead of report RSPOR_SETUP)to check whether the configuration between ABAP stack and JAVA stack is proper or not from Release 7.x onwards and please note that Netweaver Administrator is used instead of Visual Administrator from Release 7.20 onwards.
And, please note that Patch Level 0 is not supported for BI Java components as per following
