The CMIR is always maintained for the customer who orders the goods/materials. That means the ordering party is always the sold to party. In that context, whatever name and number the sold to party frequently uses for a particular material in his purchase orders, you give the same name as an alternative to your material which you maintain with different name and number in the material records so that while processing the sales order you can pick the material name by the customer identified name/number.That is the purpose of CMIR besides other reasons. So it is the SP(sold to party) for whom you maintain CMIR.
Few of our friends have the same opinion as I do in this thread.
